If you're in a REAL crunch, and only have about 5-10 minutes to put on your makeup, strip down your routine to the basics. Skip the eyeliner, for example, and go with a simple mascara brush. Here's a quick five-minute makeup routine:

• Lightly and quickly wipe your face with witch hazel on a cotton pad. This is a great way to clean your skin and get it ready for the application of your base lotion and makeup.

• Apply a thin coating of lotion - nothing greasy - even hand lotion will work in a pinch.

• Starting on your cheek, dab a fingertip with your foundation or base liquid. Spread quickly with your fingertips around the remainder of that side of your face and cheek. Don't forget to bring the makeup to just below your jaw line to avoid the tell-tale makeup "mask." Add more foundation or base, if needed - but, be careful; foundation makeup is not designed to cover up, only to blend and unify your skin color.

• Repeat the above for your other cheek, chin and forehead. Make sure that, even though you are in a rush, you blend carefully. It's important to do this in good light to see how that makeup is blending in.

• For a quick 'cover' on any blemishes, simply dab the foundation or base makeup very lightly (a q-tip will work here) and blend in. You don't have time for the full cover up, but this will definitely lessen the blemish effect until you have some time to do some cover up when you get a breather.

• Apply some rouge or blush on your cheekbones and blend in

• Apply mascara as usual. You may have to skip eye liner, eye shadow and other detail effects.

Ladies (and, let's be honest, some men), when you're putting on your foundation, mascara and other makeup, do you wonder how this all came about? In other words, why do we wear makeup, and when did we start wearing makeup? It may come as a surprise to you that the wearing of makeup is a tradition that has been in existence for literally thousands of years.

Most historians agree that makeup as worn to enhance features was first worn by ancient Egyptians, circa 3,000 BC; that's more than 5,000 years ago. Tombs from the time period have been found with jars that contained a substance that helped keep the skin hydrated and fresh; this substance was called unguent, and it was worn by both women and men.

Jump forward to ancient Rome, when it was common for women and men to darken around their eyes with coal, whiten their complexion with chalk, and add a little 'blush' effect with natural dyes that were derived from the red rocks. Romans kept their teeth sparkling white by using pumice - a rough substance obtained from cooled volcanic lava.

During the European Middle Ages, and into the Renaissance, both women and (again) men valued pale skin, and as such, applied a variety of materials, some very harmful (for example, lead paint) to the applicant. Red rouge and bright lipstick were added to the facial repertoire in the 1700s, in part to exhibit a vibrant and bright personality. Although men at that time were powdering their wigs and faces, women added the brighter colors to their face as well. In general, men wore makeup universally until the mid-1800s in Europe and the United States.

Step 1: Cleanse

To start, pick a quality cleanser that will gently exfoliate the skin, this helps clean deep in your pores and remove dead skin cells from the surface. Step 4: Camouflage

This step is optional because it is only for those of you who have severe hyperpigmentation of the face, severe acne scarring, or extreme bags under one’s eyes. Camouflage is just that, it is a camouflage that is more serious than a concealer and is used to completely hide an issue on someone’s face. If you need to use this product, just dab a bit, with a makeup wedge, on to the exact spots you need it. With the makeup wedge, gently blend the camouflage in, feathering it toward the edges of your face. Since this is a heavier product, you do not want to use a lot. A camouflage that has received rave reviews is Benefit Cosmetics’ Erase Paste. It is great, because not only does it hide; it also brightens by reflecting light off of that area of the face.

Step 5: Conceal

A concealer is also an optional step, but one that more of you are likely to use. Concealers work well for hiding minor facial issues, such as age spots, slight hyperpigmentation, acne scars, etc. As with the camouflage, you only want to use a small amount. I recommend using a concealer brush for this step, as the small brush is very precise and you will be able to put it exactly where you want it. Just dab a little in the areas that you need it and then blend it into your skin with a makeup wedge. If you used a camouflage first, then gently go back over those areas and blend again. You do not want your makeup to look as if it is standing up off of your face. A concealer that I use faithfully is LORAC’s Coverup, they have shades for a wide variety of complexions.

Step 6: Foundation

Next is the foundation, this is the product where many get confused, since there are so many different types. For dry skin, a liquid foundation or crème foundation will work best. To apply, get a clean makeup wedge and dab a generous amount (but not too much!) on your forehead, the bridge of your nose, chin and cheeks. Next, start to blend the foundation, in a small dabbing motion, into your concealer and into the rest of your face. You should constantly be working in the direction that is toward the outer edges of your face. NARS Liquid Balanced Foundation or Laura Mercier’s Silk Crème Foundation are sure bets.

For combination or oily skin, an oil-free pressed powder would be best. Repeat the same steps as above, except use a foundation brush instead and go in a swirling motion toward the edges of your face. In either case, when finished applying the foundation, lightly dab excess off of your face using a makeup puff or cotton balls. This will give you a more natural look. LORAC’S Oil-Free Wet/Dry Powder Makeup is a great choice.

Step 7: Highlights

“Highlights” is what I consider to be the remaining parts of makeup application. This includes eyeshadow, mascara, blush, lip gloss, and/or lipstick. These items can be put on in moderation or not at all, as they are only the icing on the cake.

For eyeshadow, less is always more, especially if you are new to makeup. Using a soft eyeshadow brush, gently sweep your eyelids with a color you have chosen. Once you have dipped the brush into the eyeshadow, gently tap the excess off before applying to your face. 4. The natural eye makeup is simple. Use neutral tones. The colors such as gray brown, brown, peach and mauve give freshness. These neutral colors will allow your natural shine factions complementing the iris. When I apply makeup naturally, I remain within the same family of colors for eyes, cheeks and lips. Use your natural brilliance as a guide for choosing colors. As I have a naturally rosy cheeks and lips the same color, use a shade of mauve clear, and a bright pink colorete transparently with a tint of pink. The colors do not compete with each other and are not the most important part of my face. By contrast, the brightness is the most fresh highlights in my face.

5. A clearly delineate powder can be applied to make the lashes look thicker, as in days of our youth. Probably notes that the drafting is not necessary.

6. Riza eyelashes and apply a mask or brown transparent to add length. The brown is a natural color that will not look exaggerated, but only lengthen the tabs and fill areas that seem a little spaced.

7. It uses a bar-like lips and creamy tone of your lips. Apply a little brightness in the center of the lips to accentuate its size. Instead of a bar of creamy lips, you can use a bright color. The colored glazes are excellent for giving a little color and shine all in one.
